I am Mariko, the founder of Kaminokuni.

The name Kaminokuni means “the Land of the Gods,” reflecting a Japanese perspective influenced by Shinto traditions — the belief that sacred spirits exist throughout nature and everyday life.

Born and raised in Osaka, I spent my teenage years attending school in Kyoto near Fushimi Inari Taisha, one of Japan’s most revered Shinto shrines—a place that quietly shaped my appreciation of Japan’s traditions and Shinto heritage.

After spending my twenties working in Tokyo, I set out on a journey abroad, living, studying, and traveling throughout Canada, China, Taiwan, and many other countries over eight years. These experiences, including learning English and Mandarin Chinese, taught me to appreciate different cultures and perspectives, respect the ways in which people see and live in the world, and live with gratitude.

Upon returning to Japan in my thirties, I worked as an inbound tour guide and police interpreter for nine years. Through these experiences, I became increasingly aware that Japanese culture and customs are often misunderstood or misinterpreted, especially when viewed from a different cultural perspective. Many visitors experience Japan through its temples, shrines, and beautiful landscapes, yet the deeper culture, values, and spirit behind them can easily be overlooked.

 

This is at the heart of Kaminokuni—not simply creating a premium journey through Japan, but offering authentic experiences and cultural insight from within that stay with guests long after they return home and inspire them to see life from a different perspective.
